I was deeply saddened when my iPod Mini appeared to have given up the ghost. The nostalgia, the design, the 4GB hard drive.

The symptoms are well documented: ’sad iPod’ face (pictured), whirring sound on startup, not mounting via USB. I had heard that dropping the iPod from height onto a desk tended to solve the issue, but my attempts were in vain.
A desire to educate the folks at mN through my iTunes sharing left me looking for a compact, USB powered, hard disk - and given the iPod’s seamless integration with iTunes I made another attempt.
The solution? Yes, hitting the iPod does work, but it must be on the right-hand side. A passionate thump against the spine of my Moleskine had fixed the problem.
