Building a Hacintosh for $800

http://lifehacker.com/software/hack-attack/build-a-hackintosh…

I’m from that school of thought that says the Mac is as much about the hardware as it is the software, but this is a reminder that we’re basically paying a premium for a nice case.

On the other hand it says that we, as Mac users,  are paying a little bit extra to run two countless Operating Systems as they are supposed to be run.

Add spacers to the Leopard Dock

Add spacers to the Leopard Dock, originally uploaded by hetima.

Add a line of code in the terminal, restart the Dock, and position accordingly.

  1. 1. Open terminal.app
  2. 2. Type: defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add '{"tile-type"="spacer-tile";}'
  3. 3. Type: “killall Dock” to reload the Dock.

This can be repeated multiple times, and spaces can be removed by dragging them from the Dock.

Far more elegant than the solutions in previous releases.

Pownce Gets New Themes

http://blog.pownce.com/2007/11/12/new-and-custom-themes/

Pownce, has just gotten a bunch more themes to play with, as well as the ability for Pro ($20p/a) users to customise their own. Sweet.

Note Pownce designer, Daniel Burka’s, footnote:

“I know a few people have been asking for full CSS control for editing themes. I’m really concerned about the user interface devolving into a MySpace kind of hodgepodge mess if we did that. It’s really important to me that the UI stays relatively consistent across everyones’ profiles — the navigation stays in the same places, the dimensions remain the same, etc.”

Smart move.

Kawasaki, former Apple Evangelist,  and current CEO of Garage Technology Ventures, delivers a great presentation on innovation that is equally humorous and informative. Probably the best presentation I have ever heard.

From all accounts, MAMP 1.7 seems to be working perfectly under Leopard.

37 Signals on ‘why OSX not Linux?’

http://www.37signals.com/svn/posts/695-ask-37signals-why-os-x-and-not-linux

“Linux is still not anywhere near OS X in terms of taste and feel. That’s not a slam. I’m continuously impressed at just how well things are coming along, but it’s still just not on the same level.” DHH

Ruby On Rails & Basecamp creators, 37 Signals, are known for their development under Mac OSX (see their profile on Apple.com) - their latest “Ask 37 Signals” post poses the question ‘Why OSX not Linux?’ - it’s great to see that it’s not just me that can’t deliver a straight answer as to why I’m prepared to pay a premium for my hardware.

I tend to demonstrate some of the simple UI things, like dragging a directory into terminal. Linux doesn’t do that, right?
